The Disability Comic Con is a first of its kind in Texas and we are excited to host this awesome inclusive event.

Thank you for making Disability Comic Con a great success!

We had a well attended event that exceeded our expectations on Saturday, April 27th at the Holiday Inn NW Willowbrook in Houston, TX. Attendees were able to meet with expert cosplayers, artist, illustrators, disability business owners, advocates, voice actors, and other members of the community.

There were over 300 people who walked through the doors throughout the day! Attendees ages ranged from 6 months to 70 plus. Food was supplied by the H.E.A.R.T.S Program and we had special guests panelist who advocate for people with a disability. Attendees were able to receive honest, funny, and warm hearted information from self advocate Nashville star Fiona Cauley. They also shared some laughs from voice over actor Bradley Smith. Yellow Turbo Ranger, Tracy Lynn Cruz, gave an incredibly honest, light hearted, personal presentation about her life as a Power Ranger and raising children who are on the spectrum. Disability cosplay advocates panelist shared their expertise about air brush painting, costume design, wig styling, body acceptance, and stage performance.

The event also had a cosplay competition where everyone was a winner but we did have an ultimate winner in our craftsmanship category. The winner was Blade, Khallid Greene, a retired first responder.

Our event did have some hiccups in our first year that we will learn from to improve the quality of the event. One of the main problems that we had, was a good problem - not enough space! When DCC founder, Dr. Alisa Elliot, thought of creating this event she had no idea how much of a need there was for an event like this con. It is from this lesson that she has decided to plan bigger, add more diversity to the team, and continue to have a safe space to celebrate, recognize, appreciate people and their loved ones, supporters, advocates and friends of those with visible and invisable disabilities.
